Teacher and Coach

Writing is a solitary activity undertaken in the company of readers. An editor-coach, a writing group, or a workshop helps the writer shape that reader and the conversation. I taught history writing in Harvard College and at the Harvard Extension School for ten years, and worked with grant applicants on shaping their narratives for another ten. Testimonials. Writing coach/editor

With constructive engagement, I will both give it to you straight and help you open up possibilities. I will coach you in your non- or not-so-fictional projects: personal writing and memoir, writing about nature, history, family history, grant proposals, effective letter writing, other project-related writing. I can help you with the structure of and approach to a project. Or simply set deadlines. In the end, most of us need someone to push us a little further. Testimonials

Workshops and groups in writing, history, and photography

We learn from collaborating on projects and from formulating a constructive response to the work of others. I offer goal-oriented writing groups and give writing, photography, and history workshops including creative nonfiction, everyday writing, and becoming familiar with your camera. Hosting a group or workshop for your organization is a great friend-or fundraiser. In telling a story with family photographs, for instance. I also schedule my own. Pre-scheduled workshops have published fees. Some are free. Other than those, send me an email or contact form telling me what you're interested in doing. Explore the workshops
